Madurai is the
administrative headquarters of Madurai District in
the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the
third largest city and the second largest municipal corporation in
Tamil Nadu. Located on the banks of River Vaigai, it has
been a major settlement for two millennia and is one of the oldest
continuously inhabited cities in the world. Madurai is closely
associated with the Tamil language, as all three primary
congregations of Tamil scholars, the Third Tamil Sangams, were
held in the city between the 1780 BCE and 3rd century CE.
The recorded history of the city goes back to the 3rd
century BCE, being mentioned byMegasthenes, the Greek ambassador to
India, and Kautilya, a minister of the Mauryan
emperor Chandragupta Maurya. The city is believed to be of
significant antiquity and has been ruled, at different times, by
the Early Pandyas, Medieval Cholas, Later Cholas,
Later Pandyas, Madurai Sultanate, Vijayanagar
Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Chanda Sahib, Carnatic
kingdom, and the British. The city has a number of historical
monuments, with the Meenakshi Amman
Temple and Tirumalai Nayak Palace being the most
prominent. Madurai is an important industrial and educational hub
in South Tamil Nadu. The city is home to various automobile,
rubber, chemical and granite manufacturing industries.It has

technology (IT), and some software companies have
opened offices in Madurai.
Madurai has important government
educational institutes like the Madurai Medical College,

College and Research Institute. Madurai city is administered by
a municipal corporation established in 1971 as per the
Municipal Corporation Act. Madurai is the second corporation in
Tamil Nadu next to Chennai corporation. The city covers an area of
147.99 km and had a population of 1,230,015 in
2001. The provisional population totals of the 2011 census
indicate the population of the city is 1,518,015. The city is
also the seat of a bench of the Madras High Court, one of only
a few courts outside the state capitals of
India.

The Nilgiri (blue
mountains), often referred to as the Nilgiri Hills, are a
range of mountains with at least 24 peaks above 2,000 metres
(6,600 ft), in the westernmost part of Tamil
Nadu state at the junction
of Karnataka and Kerala states inSouthern
India. They are part of the larger Western Ghats mountain
chain making up the southwestern edge of the Deccan
Plateau. The hills are separated from the Karnataka plateau to
the north by the Moyar River and from the Anaimalai
Hills and Palni Hills to the south by
the Palghat Gap. The Nilgiris District of Tamil
Nadu lies within these mountains. Its latitudinal and
longitudinal dimensions are 130 km (Latitude: 11° 08' to 11°
37' N) by 185 km (Longitude: 76° 27' E to 77° 4' E). Central
location is: 11°22′30″N 76°45′30″E. It has an area of
2,479 square kilometres
(957 sq mi).

Thanjavur, formerly Tanjore, is a city which is the headquarters of the Thanjavur District in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Scholars believe the name Thanjavur is derived from Tanjan, a legendary demon in Hindu mythology. While the early history of Thanjavur remains unclear, the city first rose to prominence during the reign of Medieval Cholas when it served as the capital of the empire. After the fall of Cholas, the city was ruled by various dynasties like Pandyas, Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Thanjavur Nayaks, Thanjavur Marathas and the British Empire. It has been a part of independent India since 1947.
Thanjavur is an important centre of South Indian religion, art, and architecture. Most of the Great Living Chola Temples, which are UNESCO World Heritage Monuments, are located in and around Thanjavur. The foremost among these, the Brihadeeswara Temple, is located in the centre of the city. Thanjavur is also home to Tanjore painting, a painting style unique to the region. The city is an important agricultural centre located in the Cauvery Delta and is known as the "Rice bowl of Tamil Nadu". Thanjavur is administered by a municipal corporation covering an area of 36.33 km2 (14.03 sq mi) and had a population of 222,619 in 2011. Roadways are the major means of transportation, while the city also has rail connectivity. The nearest airport is Tiruchirapalli International Airport, located 56 km (35 mi) away from the city. The National Institutes of Technology (NIT), the Bharathidasan Institute of Management ( BIM), Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Indian Institute of Information Technology(IIIT), Bharathidasan University (BDU) and Anna University of Technologyhave their campuses in the city. Tiruuchirappalli is internationally popular for a brand of cheroot known as the Trichinopoly cigar which was exported in large quantities to the United Kingdom in the 19th century.
Tiruchirappalli is administered by a municipal corporation established as per the Tiruchirappalli City Municipal Corporation Act 1994. As of 2001, the city covered an area of 146.70 square kilometres and had a population of 752,066. Tiruchirappalli is well-connected by road, rail and air. There are passenger flight services to destinations in South-East Asia and the Middle East.
